Kir Royale or a house in France?
When you’re looking for a site to advertise your properties on do you consider all the relevant information or do you just advertise there because they are first in Google?
Just because a site is first in Google for a particular search term does not necessarily mean they are going to bring you lots of quality targeted traffic, in fact in a lot of cases the reverse is true: that’s probably why they are first in Google after all - because they have lots of irrelevant content.
For example there is a site out there that purports to primarily be a French ‘property’ portal. If we take a closer look we find that the site ranks very well in Google, but I wonder why?
Let’s take another look at the site….hmmm there seems to be a lot of close-to useless information about holidays, lots of recipes and the odd map. Things are becoming a little clearer. It looks like they get lots of irrelevant visitors to the site - probably looking on Google and other search engines for recipes, holidays and maps, and because the site in question has these keywords built into the site, Google is picking it up and sending visitors to the site. However these visitors aren’t looking for property at all, they are looking for recipes, holidays and maps!
If we look into it a bit further and do a bit of research we find that the sites most frequently used key-phrase is ‘how to make French toast’!
For a property portal I would have thought that something to do with houses, property, real estate, estate agent, maison etc. would have been better (after all it is a ‘property’ portal).
Going deeper still we look at how many pages are viewed by all those visitors to the site and we find that on average a visitor looks at 2 pages. 2 pages! To me that would indicate a problem - either the site is attracting the wrong type of visitor or the content is very bad indeed…..maybe both.
Something else to consider is where is the traffic coming from? Lets look at our not-so-hypothetical site again, it looks like a lot of traffic is coming from India.
Strange.
I wouldn’t have thought many people in India would want a recipe for kir royale or french toast much less want to buy a house in France.
Just maybe this is an indication that the site is buying traffic to push the site up the rankings….meaning even worse enquiries (if any at all).
In these, lets face it, pretty tough times you really have to target where your property advert gets seen. You need to make sure your advert is being shown to the right people. You don’t want to get your hopes up with yet another useless enquiry from someone who thought they may ask about your property but was really looking for a recipe on how to make a kir royale!
