The Location
Le Mans, an important town in Roman times, is now chief town of the Sarthe, and is host to the near mythical annual event in the racing world, the Le Mans 24 hour race. The old town with its medieval streets, a hotch-potch of intricate renaissance stone work, medieval half timbering sculpted pillars and beams and grand classical facades, are still encircled by the original 3rd and 4th century gallo-Roman walls, supposedly the best preserved in Europe.
Le Mans has many events, one of which is the fantastic "Les Cenomanies" which takes place every summer, which celebrates the town heritage and traditions. Every year a different period of history is chosen and local inhabitants dress accordingly. A local market providing a veritable array of fresh local produce is held every Wednesday and Saturday opposite the beautiful Cathedral. There are a host of shops, boutiques, restaurants and bars, theatres and all manor of commerce making this cosmopolitan city an attractive location, all well served by a tremendous auto route access to all parts of France and beyond. TGV means Paris is just 55 minutes away.
